A Gift for Christmas – Summary

Della is a young woman who is very poor. It’s Christmas Eve, and she only has $1.87 to buy a present for her husband, Jim. She’s very sad because she wants to get him something special.

Della and Jim have two things they are very proud of: Jim’s beautiful gold watch (which belonged to his father and grandfather) and Della’s incredibly long, beautiful brown hair.

Suddenly, Della gets an idea. She goes to a shop and sells her long hair for $20. With this money, she eagerly looks for a present for Jim. She finds a perfect, simple, but well-made platinum chain for Jim’s gold watch. She buys it for $21 (using the $20 and her 87 cents).

When she gets home, she curls her now very short hair and worries if Jim will still find her pretty. When Jim comes home, he looks serious and just stares at Della with a strange expression. Della quickly explains she sold her hair to buy him a Christmas present.

Jim, after a moment, kisses her and tells her he’ll always love her, no matter what her hair looks like. Then, he gives Della her present. It’s a set of beautiful combs for her long hair – the very combs she had admired for a long time. Of course, now her hair is too short to use them.

Della, though tearful, then shows Jim the watch chain she bought for him. Jim smiles, sits down, and tells Della that they should put their Christmas presents away for a while. He explains that he sold his gold watch to get the money to buy her beautiful combs.

So, both of them sacrificed their most prized possessions to buy a gift for the other, making their gifts unusable but showing their deep love for each other.
