Story - Value of Money
PSEB 8th Class English Book
I was 14 when I learned the value of money. I wanted to get myself a new computer although there was nothing wrong with the computer I was already using.
It was summer break and I had been watching a lot of TV. There was this one advertisement that would pop up on screen all the time. It was for the latest Bell Computer. It had ‘the fastest processor’ and ‘unbelievably high storage’ among many other new features. Every time I saw it, I was intrigued.
I would go online and watch people reviewing the computer just to find out more about its features. I would read articles about its features in tech magazines. It appeared to be an ultimate computer while the limitations of my own computer made me unhappy. But my parents refused to buy me the computer when I asked them about it. Looking back now, I probably did not even need all those extra features. I could do everything I wanted to do on my own computer without running into any issues, but the consumerist in me seemed to think otherwise.
After a while, my parents noticed how obsessed I was with this new computer, so they decided to give me a chance to earn it. They told me if I started doing house chores, they would give me money for it, and I could save up until I had enough to buy the computer on my own. It seemed like a good idea, and I jumped at the opportunity. The very next day, I started waking up early to make extra time to be able to do more chores.
I would do the dishes three times a day; take the garbage out; mow the lawn on the weekends; clean the whole house and wash the car whenever needed. I was working tirelessly every day until my whole body was sore just to wake up the next day and do it again. Eventually, I got used to it, and it became easier. I also got more efficient at it, and soon I was doing everything a lot quicker.
As I got quicker, I started having more free time and didn’t really know what to do with it. “Please, Dad! Is there anything else you need help with? I’m willing to do anything; just lay it on me. Give me more chores!” I remember pleading with Dad.
I was obsessed. Any free time I had, I wanted to fill it with more work and more money. Since the summer break was almost over and I knew I would have less time once I started going to school again, I wanted to work as much as possible during the break.
It took me a few months, but I eventually saved up enough to buy myself the Bell Computer. It was a week before my birthday, and I went to the Bell Center to place an order. I knew it would take at least a week for the store to get it in case it was out of stock.
I walked in and went straight to the employee sitting behind the front desk to ask if the computer was available.
“Oh, you don’t need to buy that one. We have another one coming out soon. It is even faster and has double the storage,” he said.
I got excited for a bit before he told me how much it would cost. I realized I would need another two months of doing chores to be able to afford it.
That is when I realized how fast technology changes, and no matter how good a machine is, there will always be a better, faster model in the market before you fully get used to the one you just got.
I decided at that very moment not to buy the computer since I didn’t want to spend my hard-earned money on something that would go down in value within no time. I ended up investing all of it in a savings account. This is how I learned the value of money.

Just as I handed the bag to the young man, the faint sound of an oncoming train horn filled the air. He reached out, pulled me up, and we both jumped back onto the platform in time. I decided to approach my parents and ask if they could give me some extra money. Instead of handing me the money, they proposed something different. “If you really want it, why don’t you earn it?” my dad suggested. “You can help us out around the house and we’ll pay you for the chores,” my mom added. At first, I was hesitant; I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of spending my summer cleaning or mowing the lawn. But the thought of the game motivated me. I accepted their offer and immediately got to work. I started by cleaning out the cluttered garage, organizing everything from old boxes to dusty bicycles. The next day, I mowed the lawn under the scorching sun, sweating profusely but feeling a sense of accomplishment. Over the next week, I washed the car, cleaned the windows, and even helped in the garden. Every day brought new challenges, but I kept my eyes on the prize. Finally, after days of hard work, I saved up enough money. My parents handed me the last bit of cash, smiling proudly. I felt a sense of pride that was more valuable than the money itself. I had earned it. When I finally bought the game and played it, it felt different. I enjoyed it more, knowing that every bit of fun was paid for by my hard work. This experience taught me the importance of effort and the true value of money. |

Prepare a list of Do’s and Don’ts that will help us to save water. You can start thinking of your everyday routine when you use water. You will put up this list at a prominent place in your home where everybody can see it and make efforts to save water. You must write complete sentences.
Do’s to Save Water:
- Take quick showers: Try to finish your shower in 5 minutes or less.
- Turn off the tap while brushing: Don’t let the water run when you are brushing your teeth.
- Fix leaky taps: If a tap is dripping, get it fixed quickly.
- Use a bucket to wash cars and bikes: Don’t use a hose; use a bucket of water instead.
- Install low-flow showerheads: These use less water but work just as well.
- Collect rainwater: Use buckets or containers to collect rain for watering plants.
- Run the washing machine only when it’s full: This saves a lot of water and energy.
- Reuse water when possible: For example, use water from washing vegetables to water plants.
- Sweep driveways with a broom: Don’t use a hose to clean outside areas.
- Use a dual-flush toilet: It uses less water for liquid waste.
Don’ts to Save Water:
- Don’t leave taps running: Always turn off taps tightly when not in use.
- Don’t use running water to thaw food: Let food thaw in the fridge or use the microwave.
- Don’t ignore dripping taps or leaking toilets: Even small drips waste a lot of water.
- Don’t take long baths: Showers use less water than filling up a bathtub.
- Don’t water plants in the hot sun: Water them in the early morning or evening to save water.
- Don’t run the dishwasher half-full: Wait until it’s full to use less water.
- Don’t let water run while washing vegetables: Use a bowl of water and then reuse it for plants.
- Don’t flush trash down the toilet: It wastes water. Use a trash bin instead.
- Don’t overwater your lawn: Use a timer to control watering times.
- Don’t leave hoses or taps on: Always turn them off when you are done.
